New Liberty UMC Samaritan Scholarship Policy and Guidelines

 

General Principles:

These are general principles and are to be used for all scholarship funds held by New Liberty UMC. The purpose of these scholarships is to assist recipients with their higher educational training.

Scholarship awards are not intended to cover the full cost of school for any applicant. There may be several scholarship awards in any one year depending on the number of applicants and the amount of money available to be determined by the Scholarship Committee.

The Church Scholarship Committee consisting of three members of New Liberty UMC shall be established annually before January of the next year. The New Liberty UMC COM shall annually ratify members of this committee.

 

Principles Guiding Awards for Funds:

New Liberty UMC currently holds funds for 6 scholarships. The New Liberty Samaritan Scholarships were established in 2021 for the purpose of encouraging and supporting active New Liberty church members and their immediate family members to pursue academic and job training endeavors. 

Scholarships may be awarded to freshman undergraduate students or returning students of any college. It may be awarded to an applicant for post-graduate training requiring formal academic study or toward continuing educational endeavors, such as workshops.

Study may be full or part-time students.  Award amounts are $500 for full-time students and $250 for part-time.

Scholarship recipients may use the fund award for any legitimate higher education expenses including tuition, books, and travel.  Such awards will be paid directly to the student.

 

Selection Criteria and Recommendations:

The goal is to award all qualified applicants, not to have to choose according to their “need” or “merit”.

The criteria include the following:

  • A completed application form.
  • Proof of GPA.
  • Proof of enrollment.
  • Personal essay written by the applicant explaining why he/she is applying for the scholarship.
  • The applicant has an active relationship with New Liberty UMC.

The Samaritan Scholarship awards will be awarded to qualified applicants as follows:

  • $500 per academic calendar year for a full-time student.
  • $250 per academic calendar year for a part-time student.

Applications will be available June 1, 2023
